Pgs. 1-52

The first two chapters of Reservation Blues has been nothing short of interesting.  We learn a lot

about Native Americans and their tribes, as well as their beliefs.  Some strange things have happened

so far that are a little difficult to comprehend.  For example, Robert Johnson's guitar is personified

and given the ability to speak.  For example, when Thomas wanted to burn the guitar and make

smoked salmon, the guitar asks, "We're plannin' on burnin' me up?" (22).  I found this a little strange

and difficult to understand.  Is the guitar actually able to talk, or is Thomas simply imagining what

the guitar would say?"  Either way, it makes for some interesting points of view.

I also noticed a bit of jealousy between the band members.  Junior and Victor seem to be a little

upset that Thomas, the lead singer, seems to be getting all the attention.  Junior says, "All they want

to know is the lead singer.  Lead singer this. Lead singer that," (51).  It is going to be interesting to

see how this jealousy affects the band's relationship, and what role it will have in the novel.

  1. It's interesting that you picked up on the possible jealousy between the band members. I think it's very possible that the author could use this jealousy to teach reders a lesson pertaining to jealousy in general. The old "jealous band members" seems a little cliche but I think it could be effective in showing the ugly side of jealousy. Come to think of it, is there a side to jealousy that isn't ugly? I suppose the jealousy that proves the love you have for someone could be a good thing, but it's easy to get carried away. I think there could be a possible theme developing with this jealousy topic.

  2. I liked how you brought up the band members into your discussion. I could also notice the jealousy in the band members, and see how a lesson is possibly being taught about jealousy. Band members may become jealous if one becomes more popular than the other, but ugliness is a part of jealousy. If jealousy wasn't ugly there wouldn't be a problem with being jealous. Jealousy seems like it will be a topic of the story, because it is possible that its a good thing but may be taken to far.
