From the beginning of the novel we are placed right
into the society of the Native Americans, and their lives seem to be
interesting. They all seem to live a fairly simple life, as they all know
who each other are and when anything new in the town happens everyone knows
almost instantly. For example when a black man enter into the reservation area,
within five minutes everyone knew of this man "So the black stranger
surprised the whole tribe when he appeared with nothing more than the suit he
wore and the guitar slung over his belt" (3). Everyone knew of this
man almost instantly, and this goes to show that these Indians live fairly
boring lives, and don't do to much in their lives. In this reservation
they are to used to only they're own Indian kind living with them that when a
black man shows up, the flow of is nearly ruined. Based on what the story has
show so far, it shows that later in the future, these Indians will be to stuck
in their own ways of living that they won't be able to accept the they two
different ways of living, which would be modern day, and old school.
Another topic that should be brought
up is the meaning of music and what it means to them. It seems that later in
the book they will probably become a more popular band, but before all of that
one of the characters Thomas already has the in his mind when he says,
"This isn't my Guitar, but I'm going to change the world with it"
(13). Thomas already has big goals in his mind for what he wants to do in
the future with his musical ability, and I can't wait to see later in the book
if Thomas will end making his goal of changing the world in some way. So
far the start of this book has been decent, and I am looking forward to see how
the bands musical career unfolds.
This book seems so exciting so far! The music really seems to be a big part of the Indian culture. Thomas specifically is really into music. Your quote foreshadows that Thomas is really going to change the world. I really can't wait to see when that happens! I hope he makes it big and comes back to the reservation and helps out all the Indians there. As you said, they live really boring lives. It kind of reminds me of small communities and high schools where all the rumors spread like wildfire. So, hopefully Thomas will change all of the Indians lives for the better and increase their standard of living. I'm so excited to keep reading!
