In this section of the book we can see that’s Thomas
sees the impact and power of music. He finally found a woman named Chess
at a gig who possesses the same passion that he does. Thomas tells her stories
of when he was younger, and she says “her songs drifted across the entire
reservation…” (66). She was able to gain such a passion for music from her
mother who she obviously looks up towards for as a role model. Chess and Tom
are very similar because as we already know Thomas has a passion for music and
from this quote, we see that she too enjoys music very much.
Also in this section of this
book, the Warm Water Sisters are a main focus. Based on the words used to
describe their childhood, it was rough, for example “’Those winters were always
awful’ (62) ‘We heard… the baby struggling to breathe’ (64) “Grew up in such
poverty that other poor Indians called her family poor’” (67). These are all examples of how terrible of a
life they have lived. Their father is always drunk, and bother their brother
and mom have passed away. Before their mother had died there was constant
fighting going on between her and their father. Another example showing that
they lived poorly was that poor Indians called them poor, so they are at the absolute
bottom. Even though they are absolutely
poor, they still have hope and try to live the American Dream.
