In the Reservation
Blues I really learn a lot about the Native Americans. First of all, I learn that they are very superstitious. They believe that everything has a deeper
meaning and that there’s someone above all humans that control what
happens. For example, Sherman Alexie
says, “Johnson picked up his guitar, held it close to his body. ‘My best friend,’ Johnson said. ‘But I ain’t
gonna tell y’all his name. The gentleman
might hear and come runnin’. He gets
into the strings, you hear?’” (5)
Although, it is never explained who the “gentleman” is, it’s safe to
assume he’s a God of some type above humans.
Also, the fact that Johnson won’t say the name of his guitar shows just shows
superstitious that these people are.
Johnson thinks that the “gentleman” will somehow get into the strings and
make the guitar sound bad or not work.
To me, this is just ridiculous.
The only reason something happens to a guitar, is if you physically do
damage to it. For example, I can’t break
a guitar or make it sound bad just by saying it’s name. I just simply don’t believe that. In addition to the Native Americans being
very superstitious, they can also be very mean towards other tribes.
The Native Americans seem to have an attitude with other tribes. For example, when Thomas, Junior, and Victor, are looking for the tavern where they are suppose to play, they ask a grandmother and her granddaughter. However, they don’t help them until they tell Thomas because he’s the lead singer. For me, that just doesn’t seem right. I have faith in humanity that if they know any information, that they will help those around them. For me, it just doesn’t seem right. I always tell people any information they ask, and always expect the same of everyone else.

I think you made some very interesting points. The superstition among these characters may even be a little over board. I'm not sure what is going on when it comes to Johnson's guitar. He speaks of it as a guitar that can be damaged easily, but then the book makes it seem as though the guitar is alive. It sounds like you might be as confused as I am. It is also true what you said about rival tribes and your faith in humanity. I share your beliefs on how humans should help each other, not make life more difficult for each other. I believe this is the case with most people, but it is quite evident that there is some bad blood between tribes.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I hadn't even thought about the superstitions. I think it's interesting to see just how much of an impact these superstitions have on Native American culture especially. We often think of Native Americans being a very superstitious group. Even so, I think this portrayal begs the question of just how accurate it is. I also think that this seemingly ridiculous superstitions may help open our eyes to some of the more ridiculous superstitions that have almost become "common sense" in our society. People may deny it, but almost everyone hesitates when walking under a ladder. Things like that couldn't possibly have an adverse effect yet it has become so deeply ingrained in our society that people truly hesitate.
ReplyDeleteI think that is interesting how you brought up superstitions. you are exactly right that superstitions do have a big impact on the Native Americans. However, is this a good thing or a bad thing. These are also more outrageous superstitions much different then our superstitions are in our society. Most people may not show that they are afraid of superstitions but likely they probably are. Because superstitions are always talked about in our society, thats why people may still believe it.
